Behavior continues to be one of the hottest and most complicated topics in education. What are the rules for suspension and expulsion? What about restricting recess or giving detention? When is child find under special education triggered by behavior such that an LEA must assess a student to determine their eligibility for special education? What must be included in that assessment? Can a functional behavior assessment be part of an initial assessment? What if a student is already eligible for special education? When must a behavior assessment be completed? Does it have to be an FBA? When and how should behavior goals and/or plans be added to a student’s IEP? Is assessment required prior to adding those goals and/or behavior plan? When is it legally permissible to restrain or seclude a student with disabilities? What are the trends on these topics in special education due process hearings and compliance complaints? How do those trends affect what LEAs should be doing for and with students who have behavioral difficulties? This workshop will address both general and special education issues related to all of these topics and more.
